TWS & RAA at the WECC

The Wooden Sky and the Rural Alberta Advantage played the West End Cultural Centre last night, February 9, 2010. Turns out, a hand full of friends went to the show because of mix CDs I made them. Also turns out I wasn't the only one spreading the good word on the bands. It was a sold out show. Both bands couldn't have hoped for a better turnout. I've seen them both play venues smaller than my third floor dwelling and still be half empty. The great publicity both bands have been getting is bringing some good. Stoked that good music is being supported.

Daddy's Cup

Our family lost our grandfather on Saturday. He had a hard-fought battle with Alzheimers for several years. Very few people in this world are stronger than my father, but Grandpa was one of 'em - and probably the reason my father is.

There's a song by the Drive-By Truckers called "Daddy's Cup". It's a story of how a father taught their child everything they could, including the intangibles.

I won't post the song, you have to dig for it. Besides, if you don't own the Drive-By Truckers' record The Dirty South, you should get it. 'Til then, I leave you with a couple lines from the song.

The first time that I raced my qualifying was a shame
I started out way in the back and came back about the same
I pulled her in the pit, couldn't look my Daddy in the eye
He said "If you quit now son, it's gonna haunt you all your life"

It ain't about the money or even being #1
You gotta know when it's all over you did the best you could've done
Knowing that it's in you and you never let it out
Is worse than blowing any engine or any wreck you'll ever have
